How can I stop my little fish getting sucked into the filter?

Boy poor little fishies, But anyway, they have this sort of new sponge for filters which no it wont be for cleaning the filter, it is for covering it so the filter can do its job but at the same time, no fishes get sucked in and shredded into pieces.
